Vedic Astrology August 2, 2008
Posted by Pawan Rajvanshi in : Astrology , add a commentIn India, the study of astrology can be traced to the Vedic times. Glimpses of astrological traditions are visible in the Atharvaveda . Vedic astrology in India, more popularly known as Jyotish, relies more on the sidereal (according to the stars) positions of the planets, just as one sees them in the sky, against the positions assigned to few relatively fixed stars.
The basic difference between the Vedic and the Western astrological traditions lie in the technique of calculations. Western astrologers base their zodiac on the equinoxes. The positions of the planets the westerners calculate, continue to change with respect to the stars. Vedic astrology uses the twelve constellations from Babylonian, but also has an additional “lunar” zodiac based on 27 lunar constellations or Nakshatras . The names of the 27 Nakshatras are:
| 1 Ashwini | 10 Maagh | 19 Mool |
| 2 Bharani | 11 Poorv Phalguni | 20 Poorv Ashadh |
| 3 Krittik | 12 Uttar Phalguni | 21 Uttar Ashadh |
| 4 Rohini | 13 Hasta | 22 Shravan |
| 5 Mrigashir | 14 Chaitr | 23 Dhanisht |
| 6 Ardra | 15 Swati | 24 Shatabhish |
| 7 Punarvasu | 16 Vaishakh | 25 Poorv Bhadrapad |
| 8 Paushya | 17 Anuradha | 26 Uttar Bhadrapad |
| 9 Ashlesh | 18 Jyeshtth | 27 Revati |
According to Vedic astrology, all celestial bodies, be they the sun, the moon, the planets or stars, influence the terrestrial phenomena, or indicate such phenomena by their various configurations. The configuration of the planets and stars at the moment of birth determine one’s basic life story inclinations, strengths, weaknesses. Horoscope, or the natal chart is therefore the construction of basic placement of planets at the time of birth. The resulting chart is used to understand and better respond to general life issues as well as particular situations. The interpretation of the chart incorporates the angular relationships between the planets and the signs of the zodiac, the area of the chart in which they fall and other symbolic indicators to examine the different experiences and psychology of the individual.
An astrologer then analyzes the pertinent information, exploring how the various aspects of the client’s personality may be integrated and finding ways to draw the greatest fulfillment from the energies symbolized in the chart. Remedial actions are then taken to enhance the person’s life both spiritually and materially. It also defines the actual traits of an individual’s life, his marital compatibility and his future, based on the position of planets at the time and place of his birth. Health and disease are integrally related to astrology. Even the famous Greek physician, Hippocrates, observed that it’s essential to look into the natal chart of a patient before embarking on any course of treatment, especially if surgery is required.
These constellations are based on the approximate number of days that the Moon takes to complete a cycle relative to the stars. The Vimshottari dasa predicates the moon’s position through the lunar science in the Indian tradition. This is also used to calculate Muhurtas , or auspicious time to begin any job.
Vedic astrology considers the movement of two luminaries namely the Sun and the Moon, five major planets, i.e., Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Jupiter, and the two nodal points of the Moon, namely Rahu and Ketu. The twelve equal sections of the Zodiac are given below in the order as they are:
| Indian | Western | |
| 1 | Mesh | Aries |
| 2 | Vrishabh | Taurus |
| 3 | Mithun | Gemini |
| 4 | Kark | Cancer |
| 5 | Simha | Leo |
| 6 | Kanya | Virgo |
| 7 | Tula | Libra |
| 8 | Vrishchik | Scorpio |
| 9 | Dhanush | Sagittarius |
| 10 | Makar | Capricorn |
| 11 | Kumbh | Aquarius |
| 12 | Meen | Pisces |

New Delhi, August 1:: Virender Sehwag scored an emphatic 200 in trying circumstances even wickets fell in heap on the other end.
At the end of 81 overs India was 328 for 9 with Sehwag (200) and last man Ishant Sharma (0) on crease.
Virender Sehwag continued to thrash the Sri Lankan bowlers even as Ajantha Mendis scalped Laxman and Karthik. At the end of 70 overs India was placed catiously on 307/6 with Virender Sehwag on 184 playing in the company of skipper Anil Kumble (2).
Earlier VVS Laxman and Sehwag started the day brightly for India as they kept the Indian bowlers at bay by adding 100 runs for the 5th wicket. This was before Laxman guided a long hop in the hands of midwicket. It was a soft dismissal and it might cost India dearly.
Wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik came and went tamely and it will take a Herculean effort from him to retain his place in the final XI in the third Test.

Jammu, August 2: : The Army has been called in Jammu and Samba in order to ensure that no further violent protest takes place in the region.
Protests against the forest land transfer to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) took an ugly turn on Friday when two protesters were killed and scores of others injured in police firing at Samba and clashes with policemen across Jammu region. Those killed have been identified as Sunil and Yougal Samyal.
The events took place even after Governor NN Vohra announced the shrine board will be handed back the responsibility of running the annual yatra.
Army was called tonight in Samba and the unit conducted a flag march. Though curfew was imposed in Jammu and Samba, protesters openly defied the orders and fought pitched battles with police and also set afire a police station.
Meanwhile, the Shri Amarnathji Yatra Sangarsh Samiti has declared it would hold no further talks with Vohra over the Amaranth land row. The Samiti has been spearheading a stir in the Jammu region for a month demanding restoration of land to SASB and removal of Vohra.
“We have decided not to hold any talks with the governor over the Amarnath land dispute as there is no blueprint to resolve the issue,” Samiti spokesperson Tilak Raj Sharma said.
Jammu is boiling for the last one month since protests broke out demanding restoration of the land transfer order.
On Friday, Schools, businesses and other institutions have been closed and curfew was reimposed as fresh violence erupted following the arrival of National Conference patron and former CM of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah and People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti in Jammu.
Amaranth protesters clashed with cops at various places leaving over 10 people including two policemen injured. They also burned a Panjtirthi police post.
More than 1,000 Hindu activists had laid a siege around Jammu Airport once they came to know that Farooq and Mehbooba had landed from Srinagar. The two remained stranded at the airport for more than two-and-half hours. Finally they were escorted by a massive police team to the Raj Bhavan.
Some activists of the Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) parked trucks on the main road leading to the Raj Bhavan to block the passage. They also demonstrated outside the Raj Bhavan at Panjtirthi raising slogans against governor N N Vohra, Mehbooba, Farooq and Omar Abdullah. They burned effigies of NC and PDP leaders and flags during protests across the city.
Agitators also tried to enter Raj Bhavan but were prevented by police. Violent protests also took place at the Parade and Purani Mandi areas where agitated mobs pelted stones besides targeting the police personnel with firecrackers. There were demonstrations and road blocks at various places.
The Centre has also refused to support BJP’s demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir government’s order allotting land on a temporary basis to Amarnath Shrine Board to build shelters for Shiva devotees who throng the state for a darshan.
Centre’s stance was conveyed to BJP leader L K Advani and his colleague Arun Jaitley by PM Manmohan Singh on Thursday evening. “This will lead to complications,” Singh is learnt to have told his visitors. The PM had called Advani and Jaitley over to discuss the volatile situation.

Harkishan Singh Surjeet passes away August 2, 2008

New Delhi, August 01: The Veteran CPI (M) leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet passed away at the age of 92 after prolonged illness. His demise came about at 1.35 pm on Friday at the Metro Hospital in Noida. Surjeet, better known as the ‘Chanakya’ of Indian politics, died due to multiple organ failure compounded by a sudden cardiac arrest. His cremation would be done on Sunday.
Surjeet was infact not keeping well for long and had been in & out of hospitals for the past six months. He was even in comma in May but recovered and was recuperating at his Teen Murti Lane residence in Delhi, before being shifted to hospital again on July 07 with complaints of lung infection.
Dr Purshottam Lal of the Metro Hospital confirmed that the immediate reason for his demise was a massive cardiac arrest that was linked to the failure of other organs as well. As per Dr Lal Surjeet was not conscious during the last moments and passed away peacefully.
Surjeet’s death can be termed as the end of an era as he was one of the chief architects of the coalition experiments involving secular forces in the country. However, he was not into active politics for the last two years due to ill health.
Even within his own party he was considered in very high regards; in league with CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu. He was indeed one of the stalwarts of the Left movement in India and was the general secretary of the party from 1992 to 2005.
Surjeet was instrumental in forming a number of anti-BJP coalitions in the 1990s and for ensuring Left support the present UPA government.
Many times, including after the 2004 Lok Sabha election and even during the 1996-1998 United Front government, his role has been that of a cunning Chanakya of parliamentary politics; mending and sewing broad coalitions.
With his health declining, Surjeet was, for the first time, not included in the CPI(M) Polit Bureau in early April 2008. But considering his stature, he was instead designated as Special Invitee to the Central Committee.
Expressing grief over his demise CPI leader D Raja said, “It’s very sad to hear that Surjeet is no more. He was an outstanding comrade as he knew how to mobilise the people towards the ideology.”
The veteran leader will be cremated on Sunday. Surjeet’s body would be kept at his Teen Murti Marg residence from 0700 to 0930 hours on Sunday, after it is embalmed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences tomorrow, party sources said.
It would be brought to the AKG Bhavan, the CPI(M) headquarters, later and kept there till 1430 hours.
The cremation will take place at the Lodi Road Electric Crematorium on Sunday afternoon, according to party sources.
